Studio News from Caren Shayne

September 2011

The first full year in our beautiful new art studio was busy, productive, and very exciting!

We began the year by learning how to use a variety of art materials such as watercolor paints, oil pastels, acrylic paint, and clay. Many of the classes learned how to produce handmade paper and made their own Valentine's Day cards.

The children of 4 South learned how to work with real tools to create wonderful wood sculptures, and the children of 2 South became very involved in their class study of Bridges and created amazing structures out of recycled materials.

Pinch pots were beautifully created by 2 North and given as mother's day gifts, and 4 North made adorable stuffed monsters which they designed and sewed themselves.

The year culminated in a fabulous student art exhibit inspired by the artists of the 1970s. The children from each class produced pieces of artwork using the techniques and materials of famous artists such as Andy Warhol, Willem de Kooning, Paul Rauschenberg, and Cy Twombly.

The children were proud to show off their masterpieces when they were put on display in the Carnegie Room and then later auctioned off at the Brick biennial auction.

As we begin to settle in to this new school year, I am excited to see the the familiar faces of the returning children, as well as welcome the new children and their families. I hope that you will all feel free to come up to the 6th floor and explore the studio for yourselves. The best time to visit is before drop-off or before or after pick-up time.

I look forward to another very creative year!
